EP16: Build Ownership of Learning
Taking ownership and initiative can be taught. It might take time, but it is possible. In this episode, we talk about reflection, self-assessment, and small wins as keys for parents who want to build ownership of learning.
The Resources
USE 3-2-1 TO HELP YOUR CHILD REFLECT
Reflection is an important part of the learning process for your child. When our children reflect over their schoolwork and self-assess, they own their learning, which will help keep them moving forward to the next step. 3-2-1 is a reflection tool you can use to guide reflective conversations with your child. 3-2-1 is a structure you to collect information from your child, which will help both you and your child know whether they are hitting the mark.
SORT CARDS TO HELP YOUR CHILD SELF-ASSESS
An important part of learning is having an awareness about what we know and what we don’t know. When it comes to schoolwork, asking your child to identify what they know and don’t know helps them focus their efforts so they can get from the place of not knowing to knowing. Sort Cards can help your child identify where they stand on their assignments and help them develop the habit of self-assessing.
