ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
How to Create a Culture of Belonging for All Students
Belonging is the innate human desire to be a part of something larger than us.
– Brené Brown
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has identified seven things to expect from students as the socioemotional impact of the pandemic lingers. In this roundtable, Leader Coach Dr. Kathy Oropallo shares research from NASP and asset-based teaching tactics that educators can use to provide the best support possible through a culture of care that heightens students’ sense of belonging.
In the roundtable and the discussion, Kathy discusses ways to help your students and staff prepare to weather what’s ahead as we gradually recover from the pandemic by focusing on a culture of care and belonging for all students. Kathy also challenged leaders to think about:
- How do asset-based teaching and learning cultivate a culture of care and true belonging?
- How do we make a culture of care and belonging a priority for our districts and schools in the 2021-2022 school year?
- What will it look like if we are successful?

Create a Culture of Belonging for All Students
Our students have an innate need for connection and belonging. Developmental, educational and neuroscience research speaks to this basic human need. Neuroscience reinforces the need for others to help us process and retain our learning. Students even learn better when they have relationships with those around them. Ultimately, learning – and student success – are amplified when there is an existing relationship between teachers and learners. Therefore, it’s no surprise that when teens are asked about what they want and need, belonging and being part of a group are highly ranked. Connection is key to student success.
